The Beginning:
In 1974, our son, Don Lee, began to collect comic books. I took him to lots of cities in Virginia that had comic book stores, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, etc.
One Saturday we went to a comic book store in Richmond, on Broad Street. As my son was looking through large stacks of books, I noticed several boxes of baseball cards behind the counter. A 1953 Whitey Ford Card was priced at $5.00. A Baseball Card for $5.00? I thought, who would pay for a baseball card?
The following week I returned to my mother's house in search of my old baseball cards. I checked the closet only to find my mother had discarded all of my toys. I was very disappointed. Then it came back to me...there was a small cabinet next to the bed where I use to keep my cards. Were they still there? Yes!! There were 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955 and 1956 Topps Cards and about a dozen 1955 Topps Double Headers. Most of the cards were in great condition. I recalled when I was a kid, I would line the cards up in the hall and put them end to end and count the cards I had the most of. I remember that I had 14 1953 Murray Wall Milwaukee Braves Cards. My favorite player and card was the 1953 Wilmer Mizell with the St. Louis Cardinals - I think I had 9 or 10 of his cards. I was hooked!! I started running ads in the local newspaper buying baseball cards - I would go around to thrift stores and antique shops.
More often than not, they would sell me a shoe box full of cards for $20.00 or less, which would include Commons, Stars, and Rookies, and laugh as I walked out the door. In 1979 we opened a small shop in an Antique Mall in Grafton, Virginia. Later in the years, we moved to Mercury Mall in Hampton. In 1987, we moved to our final destination in West Mercury Shopps at 3324 W. Mercury Blvd. in Hampton, which we think is one of the best locations in Virginia!
